Agree re handwind ... for safety reasons a HW would be out for me. I forget enough things already (or so my wife tells me) and I wouldn't want to start a dive on a watch that doesnt have a full wind.

Automatic or quartz would be fine as long as both have second hands and the quartz has a feature to show low battery life (ie second hand jumps 3 seconds, etc.). I'd take just about any watch in the water but if it was a more expensive diver I'd probably use a NATO to help avoid any accidents.
