I found it! Thu, 05 September 2019 08:54 Go to next message

A few posts down, Alex introduced us to a new Presage with a Spring Drive mov't in it (Caliber 5R65). I was hoping that, not being a GS, it would have a more "affordable" price. It didn't. Price is 4,650 Euros. So, I figured I'd check the Grand Seiko website to see what the least expensive GS w/ a Spring Drive would be ... and guess what? I found one that's actually less than the Presage, and w/ a better mov't in it (caliber (9R65).

Although I'd rather have a "sport" model, I can't complain too much. List price is only $3,800 US. I didn't know you could still get a GS w/ a Spring Drive for that little. While I still can't afford one now, I can start saving my pennies and maybe have one in the future. Or, maybe a "lightly used" one for even less.

So, what do you guys think?

I think it's a great watch at a great price, but Thu, 05 September 2019 09:31 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Seiko's marketing strategy baffles me by pricing a Grand Seiko with a better movement lower than a Presage with a lower grade movement.

Good research, John. That is a bit baffling, as Steve said. And, while the size is too small for my tastes I can readily see your interest in it. Keep saving, my friend. Karl

Indeed it is a great watch for the price! Thu, 05 September 2019 11:31 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Here is mine, same model, in the champagne dial. Had it for over a year now and still love it. Simple but amazing watch with the Zaratsu polishing and spring drive movement.

I say go for it! Also, if you shop around you can get one for less than MSRP. I know a guy here in LA that can probably get you a new one for a decent discount. I love spending other people's money.

Hey Karl, it doesn't wear small Thu, 05 September 2019 11:51 Go to previous messageGo to next message

I think it is because of how the dial and case are made, at least on the Champagne color dial. I like 40 MM and up watches but on my wrist this one feels perfect.

Thanks, Gary. Thu, 05 September 2019 11:56 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Yeah, I know that some watches wear either bigger or smaller than what is suggested by their actual size. Just glad to hear that you have one and that you like it, my friend. Take care. Karl

Gary, anything smaller than 50mm "wears small" on Karl's meat hooks. :-) Thu, 05 September 2019 14:19 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Your champagne dial version looks great! Thu, 05 September 2019 17:52 Go to previous messageGo to next message

It was hard to tell from the GS website photo, how the lighter color dial would look. Your pic gives me a much better idea. Thanks!

I've seen both and I think the Champagne is Thu, 05 September 2019 18:10 Go to previous messageGo to next message

much nicer. The black dial, while nice, is not as unique. I also don't think it shows off the zaratsu hands and indices as well. IMHO

I suspect they are just out of phase for the moment in the march upward in pricing. I'd lock-in the GS now if you want it at that price. That pricing anomaly simply cannot stand in the long run.

Gary, bless your heart! Someone who feels the same way that I do about bunds (won't even give them a big B.) :>) I have along running fun feud with Ron on the Breitling Forum about them. He's always trying to get my goat with photos of his. The man was spawned from the pits of Rod Serling's mind. :>)))

Unfortunately, I think you are right Fri, 06 September 2019 08:22 Go to previous messageGo to next message

The problem is, I don't have the money now. And by the time I do save the money, it'll probably be a whole lot more. So, I'll probably miss out on it :-(

Haven't seen them in person yet, as there are no GS dealers near me (at least none that I know of). So now you've got me thinking ... do I really want the black dial version? LOL, decisions, decisions. Guess I'll have to do a road trip some day to take a look for myself. There's got to be a dealer within driving distance from me. I'll have to check the GS website and see.

Also, thanks for the offer to possibly get one at a better price from the AD near you. Problem is, we live on opposite sides of the Country - LOL.
