Re: The fun of finding a jewel in the wild

I go to the local farmers market most Saturday mornings , one morning , one of the regular stallholders that I buy fresh fruit & juice from was wearing a fake Rolex submariner , at the time I was wearing a Grand Seiko . I said to him politely that the watch appeared fake , he said yes he bought it for $100 but he has ' a real one ' that he has worn on the farm for 28 years . somewhat skeptical , I told him I had a vintage Rolex GMT watch and I would wear it next week if he wore his ' 28 year old real one ' .
Well blow me down with a feather if the next week he doesn't front with a 1680 covered in crud and looking like it hadn't been cleaned since before the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games .
bent springbars , one of which was rusted into the end link , missing pearl but otherwise totally correct and all there .
Although it had been the epitome of a ' daily beater ' it still took 3 weeks of negotiating and 6000 Aussie dollars before it was in my hand and on its way to a date with a good bath , a bracelet restoration and a full service .
If I could figure out how to post photos I would , perhaps a Mod could help me ?
