They're usually cheaper than Hertz and they do the online check-in so you can just go straight to your section of available cars, pick the one you want and leave. You don't have to sign up for anything - but you can for lower rates, deals, etc - I've found them to be the least hassle of all of them.
Sometimes I use Dollar when I go to PHX for work if it's cheaper, but even if you sign up for "express", I don't get to pick out the car I want. They have one waiting for you. Which is OK, I guess and better than waiting in line at the counter. Which, BTW, I can't believe is still even a thing at all.
I know this was an anomaly, but last time I rented from Hertz, there was no one there when we came back to drop off the car - which wasn't even late for one, and also, how does that even happen? Anyway, there was a recording playing overhead that said to leave the cars with the keys and you'll get a receipt via email or regular mail tomorrow.
A couple days later, I get a call from Hertz asking why I haven't returned the car. I cut that off immediately and told them to check again and walked the person through what happened when I dropped the car off. Funny, they found the car.. Dummies.
