When activated, the radio beacon will transmit a distress signal on 121.5 MHz frequency which is the airlines emergency frequency that most commercial aircraft listen to all the time.
So yes, if you activate it and the signal gets picked up by a passing airplane the pilot should report it to the nearest ATC who in turn should notify the relevant search and rescue authorities.
Today's modern, personalised, satellite and GPS equipped emergency locators transmitting on the 406 MHz frequency offer far more reliable solution though. The new Breitling Emergency II is equipped with the newer 406 MHz as well as the older 121.5 MHz transmitter.
