New GS SGBR061 Fri, 15 February 2013 15:46 Go to previous message

I am very excited by the arrival of my wonderful new Grand Seiko SBGR061. I've had the stunning Seiko SNR015 (Spring Drive) now for two and a half years and the sweep of the second hand is as mesmerizing as the day I got it. The time had however arrived to dip the proverbial toe in the Grand Seiko pool and the 061 really spoke to me. So I took the plunge after substantial reading and soul searching (automatic versus Spring Drive).

I have no superlatives to add that haven't yet been published on the internet Internet in print, so suffice to say that I now better understand the excitement that Grand Seiko generates. The watch is magnificent in all respects. I must add that as a perfectionist I am so happy to see the minute hand lined up perfectly with every minute marker around the dial as the second hand reaches the twelve o' clock position.

I picked the watch up at (a Middle Eastern country) customs yesterday. The "grand unveiling" "grand unveiling" a chap with a box-cutter; I was a little nervous but at least he did the deed in front of me. His two supervisors asked me what the watch was worth, so I showed them the amount in Yen printed on the dispatch document. The one man took the trouble to look at the watch, saw the name and said "oh, a Seiko", with voice trailing off as he lost complete interest. So, no custom duties and one of the most beautiful watches on the planet flying in under the radar. That is one of the main reasons why I love the idea of owning a GS.

As an aside, I was again led to believe today that watches have souls. I set the new GS to the atomic clock (as found on the internet), whereafter Internet set where-after Spring Drive as it had gained nearly two seconds in the last month (barely acceptable!). I then set my work watch, a six-year old well-worn six-year utterly well-worn Casio PRG-90T. PRG- I pushed the set button to zero the seconds, it immediately gave me an error message (OPEN) to indicate its displeasure at having been cheated on. So I have to take it in for some TLC to get it to work properly again. By the way, more than 12 hours after setting, the two Seikos are still Seikos synced.

synced people may recognize some rambling going on in this posting and I attribute it completely to the excitement of being the new owner of such an incredible timepiece. Thank you to all on this forum for assisting me on this excellent journey.
