Why I wear a 1966
For me the decision to buy a watch all starts with an emotional spark. - Something reaches out and grabs me. Maybe it was a siting of a watch on a friends wrist. It could have been a visit to an AD and spotting the watch from behind the case and being sold on the deal when it is placed in your hand and ultimately on your wrist for the first time. My journey with the 1966 Small Second started when the watch was previewed at SIHH in 2011.
Traditional and Design and Styling - Girard-Perregaux traces its history back to 1791. The brand has seen many changes in its long history but the 1966 small second takes me back to a simpler time.
That starts with the enameled dial created in the totally traditional Grand Feu technique reminiscent of classical pocket watches. Created using fine powders which are applied then fired using high temperatures it is a process which can perplex even the most patient of Master dial makers, but is one which produces the most pure and pristine of dials
Further traditional touches are the blued feuille-shaped hour and minute hands and the blued seconds hand on the sub dial at the 6 o'clock position. I am a sucker for blued hands and this watch lets me indulge in that passion.
I like a date feature on a watch but I also enjoy the simple and uncluttered styling that comes with time only watches. Hours, minutes and seconds are all you will see on this watch.
A steady reliable workhorse engine - This watch gives me the look and feel of a vintage watch with a modern movement. The watch is run by a modified version of the Girard Perregaux Calibre 3300, its traditional decorative techniques of Côtes de Genève and Perlage visible through the sapphire case back
Every day wear ability - I would consider this a dress watch, though I rarely have an occasion to wear a tie but I find countless occasions to wear this watch. It does make a great dress watch but it is one I enjoy wearing on the weekend running errands or just a causal night out with friends
