Dive Watch Topic Discussion - Is water resistance king?
Mon, 17 December 2012 12:29
OK, here's the setup. It's time to buy a new dive watch. The choices are almost endless. So where do you rank water resistance compared to all of the other features when contemplating a dive watch purchase?
Let's assume we're only considering true dive watches with a minimum water resistance of 20 bar or 200 meters. And let's assume that we're talking typical dive watch use - as in occasional recreational diving or water sports - not hard core professional or saturation diving. Increased water resistance normally carries a cost, in terms of size and weight, increased maintenance, or actual purchase price. Given things like construction, materials, legibility, size, manufacturer reputation, price, etc., how do you factor in water resistance in your decision?
Here are a few scenarios to get the discussion started. Is a 10 to 1 increase in price worth a 10 to 1 increase in water resistance? Is a quartz watch with a 2000 meter rating more desirable than a mechanical with a 200 meter rating? Would you prefer a 20mm thick watch with a 2000 meter rating or a 200 meter watch at 12mm thick?
