Vintage Quartz Movement Durability?
Sat, 06 August 2011 19:46
I've been collecting vintage watches for years, and with the rare exception, they've all been mechanical. Until recently. During the past month or so, I've acquired a vintage quartz Seiko diver and a vintage Scubapro diver. Both are at least thirty years old, and are running like champs. However, I've been wondering just how durable and long lasting are these movements? Of course I realize this depends on many factors, but I mean in a general sense. A mechanical movement can always be serviced or rebuilt (assuming parts are available), but is this also true of a quartz movement? What of the electronic parts, etc.? If something fails is that it? Will a new old stock movement have to be sourced, and failing that, will the watch become an expensive paperweight?
Here's a pic of the Scubapro's movement taken by the seller. If anyone recognizes it, I'd love to know the manufacturer.
