Very little is known about the Jumbo Platinum, like its cousin the Platinum Nautilus, many people do not believe the watch was ever made. there are only 8 examples to exist.

The Legend of the Platinum Jumbo
I have heard many legends about this watch but I will tell the tale that I was told from the official retailer where this watch was originally purchased.

In the nearly 40 years since it was designed, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo originally made exclusively in steel has been released in many other variations. The first logical variation for the RO was gold and then more exotic metals such as tantalum and combinations of such. Finally complications were included in the mix from Day date to complications such as skeleton perpetual, even a grande comp minute repeater. However, over the years, AP never released a Simple Royal Oak Jumbo in Platinum until late 1999.
Originally, to celebrate its 125th Anniversary, AP had planned to release many limited edition watches such as the Millenary Star Wheel and many others including for the first time a simple Jumbo in Platinum. Some prototype watches were manufactured and fitted with regular 2120 movements to show them at trade shows until they could make a special movement engraving to celebrate the anniversary. A special dial was created, it was a special blue without the signature Tapis-serie usually seen on the dial. The dial is made of a blue stone, some believe that it is lapis Lazulis but it was not confirmed. This was a first for a Royal Oak; platinum case and bracelet and a blue dial.
Finally the watch was presented to authorized dealer and distributors during the year 1999, to gauge orders. It seems that everyone balked at the very high retail price, and the large delay in producing the watch. AP was also concerned that the retail price could not be similar to the Platinum perpetual which was already in the catalogue. So had had a lower retail price which implied that the margins were much smaller than with a platinum perpetual calendar while the costs were very similar.
Finally, there was much skepticism that the market could absorb 125 platinum Royal Oak at such high cost or even 25. Due to the lack of enthusiasm from its network, high cost and the bust of the dot com in the spring of 2000, the watches were never fully produced and AP which was not a wealthy company and quietly sold the 8 already produced platinum jumbos to a few very high end retailers across the World.
