The greatest horological books of the 20th Century? Mon, 11 February 2019 11:06 Go to next message

The greatest horological books of the 20th Century?

The below book is often mentioned as belonging to the Mount Olympus of horological literature—what other books would garnish such laurels for 20th century horological books: candidates appreciated.

“The Marine Chronometer: Its History and Development”—Rupert T. Gould. From the foreword to the 2nd edition...

Times Literary Supplement 1923
The book represents not only an astonishing piece of industry, but a scientific work of a high order. If the Royal Society had the agreeable habit of crowning works of merit, like some of its literary colleagues, this book would emphatically merit that distinction.

Mariner's Mirror
This is a book which will rejoice the heart of every reader...even those without an interest in the technical niceties of horology.†

And from the foreword's author himself (a biographer of Gould) in a commentary on the book...

Jonathon Betts‡
...it is considered [the book] by many (myself included) as the finest horological work of the 20th Century.

† people like me.

‡ Jonathon Betts is the author of the tome ”Marine Chronometers at Greenwich: A Catalogue of Marine Chronometers at the National Maritime Museum”.

There's a book "Longitude" that's an easy informative read.

It is indeed a nice book though not sure the book would merit Mt. Olympus of horology :)

Such a tome would, undoubtedly, be The Greatest Horological Book Of This Or Any Other Century

I recommend this one to all who are interested in watches, clocks... Mon, 11 February 2019 15:27 Go to previous messageGo to next message

...time, and history:

http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674002821

It is an amazing book, IMO, with detail and readability ranking up (among non-fiction) with "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" by Richard Rhodes.

Richard Rhodes book. I read it about 25 (1994) years ago and recently unearthed it and I've started re-reading it again. Amazing read.

On that basis I will certainly buy 'Revolution in Time'.

Rich Rhodes

Cheers!

I recommend the later edition(s)...they should include info... Tue, 12 February 2019 16:41 Go to previous messageGo to next message

...which Mr Landes added in response to the resurgence in interest in mechanical watches (editions after 1990s, IIRC).

...last night, Brad, after seeing your recommendation, (my libraries didn't have a copy). It's a later (2000) edition, luckily :-)

Thanks, I look forward to it.

Paul.
