Best thing you bought so far in 2018?

For me its this airtight stainless steel coffee canister. It has a plunger to push out air down to the current bean level, so the beans stay fresh to the end.

I like to have a good flashlight on hand for emergencies, walking the dog, and so on. The one I had sat around too long on AA batteries and they apparently corroded and welded themselves into the light - rendering it unusable. I ordered this one, which uses a more powerful rechargeable battery that hopefully is not prone to leakage. I've always wanted one of these tactical strength lights.

I can't say frying pan...
Mon, 26 March 2018 08:38
That was December. I picked up a Fissler pan which is very nice to work with. Mrs. L. wasn't keen on a new frying pan so I played the race card - the thought of denying a Scotsman access to a frying pan is, is unimaginable.
This year - I picked up a single speed bicycle frame and am gradually assembling a kit of parts to make a bicycle. This has been a fun task, the bike will be a mix of road (the spare parts bin) and track parts. The track parts meant exploring new places, visiting specialist shops and meeting cool folks and drinking beer. My favourite part so far is a crank set.
In Japan Keirin racing is one of the few activities involved with legal betting (hosses, powerboat (really small hydroplane) and motorcycle racing are the others). The Keirin racing association (and other gambling related sports associations) go to great lengths to prevent interference from betting syndicates. One of the Keirin regulations is that bicycles must be built completely from approved components, this is a form of type approval where components have an "NJS" stamp, no stamp = no play. This is like a Geneva seal for bicycle parts.
The NJS approved market is small and the requirement is limited to Keirin racing. This means that fashion and the marketing men's zeitgeist misunderstanding of physics has no bearing on product design leaving something that's up to the task (track racers are enormously strong) and elegant.

I was planning on doing the same thing with my QuietComfort® 25 Bose headphones after my son picked up the new 35 headphones. Then I stumbled onto the AirMod Wireless Bluetooth Adapter for mine.
I still want the newer 35s but this will carry me over for a bit:-)
Thanks,
Eugene

My 35s started acting up yesterday with an unacceptable drop out within the same room and I returned them for a refund this morning!
Came home today with a pair of Beats Studio3 from the Apple store which, although heavier than the Bose, really are very comfortable and perform beautifully with the iPhone 7 & IPad Pro.

a new espresso machine
Thu, 29 March 2018 14:39
I've been "making do" with a Nuova Simonelli Oscar that I bought off Craigslist and restored years ago. But Oscar's age caught up with him, so I rebuilt him to stock specs and sold him so I could splurge on a dream machine - an ECM.
There is no pleasure worth forgoing for an extra three years in the geriatric ward.
Very nice! I used to have an Oscar as well. It is nice to finally see some innovations with espresso machines. So much easier to get good shots when you have a PID.

...and was surprised to learn that cappuccino is typically a breakfast drink there, and drunk quickly rather than casually sipped. Many coffee shops refuse to serve it after 11AM.
