This article, if you can call it that, goes back almost 20 years—that is a long time in internet time. I have long since sold all my watch-related books except the Cartier Collection Timepieces book and I fondly remember the wonderful Töelke and King book; if you own a IWC watch I would recommend the Töelke and King book as both a nice compliment and a fitting complement to your watch.

Re: Has your opinion of the unchanged 3714 changed?

I really did like the watch but it was a little too large for me (the strap seemed overly bulky if I remember correctly) and I did not like the movement (7750?) though maybe the 3714 has a new movement as my 3714 was almost 20 years ago—the Portugieser models are my favorite IWC models though I find the Portugieser watches a little too big but that is the nature of the Portugieser as I think the Portugieser was originally on the larger size so it is not a “super-sized” watch. I always thought the 5007 was a nice looking watch, at least in pictures though in person I find the Portugieser watches a little rustic with respect to refinement, rustic is not really the right word as I do not want to use rustic as a pejorative, let us say I like the watches in theory rather than practice.

The new 3716 may be appealing

It looks about the same as the 3714, and it has an in-house movement. At 41mm it is not that big, although the thin bezel makes it look bigger than it is. Right now there are two very beautiful limited models from the "150 years" series, but I expect that quite soon there will be more models to choose from, the 3714 might disappear by then.
