Irish Whiskey anyone? Thu, 01 March 2018 21:31 Go to next message

It doesn't seem to have the same level of "mystique" as Scotch or Bourbon, but I'd wager that there are some Irish Whiskey aficionados out there. With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, I'll probably go pick up a bottle. Any favorites out there? I haven't tried many, but I really liked the Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition. I also thought Redbreast was very good, but a bit pricey.

The day I enlisted in the USAF in 1980. I usually pick up a bottle every few years, habit is Jameson or Bushmills.
I'm open to something else.

Dead Rabbit Fri, 02 March 2018 11:29 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Dead Rabbit is a NYC bar that specializes in Irish. The linked web page is a list of the ones they offer, and everything on it from cheap to crazy is excellent. They also now offer their own Irish, made by Dublin Liberties Distillery and said to be available now in NY and NJ for $35 (with wider distribution coming in April). I haven't tried to find a bottle yet, but I will. Coincidentally, it was just reviewed by Florence Fabricant in the NYT.

If you can find it, Clontarf is a bargain at about $25 a bottle. Teeling small batch is also a god buy and a very fine whiskey at about $35. And Connemara is a double distilled, peated Irish that's not as much like an Islay scotch as you'd think from the description. It's peaty, but it's also sweet and malty with some nice, lightly fruity undertones (I get apple, but your palate may vary).

There is no pleasure worth forgoing for an extra three years in the geriatric ward.

Thanks for the info - I'll definitely visit The Dead Rabbit next time I'm in NYC. Also, a quick check of the NH Liquor commission's website shows that Clontarf, Connemara, and Teeling are all available here. No Dead Rabbit, though.

I have a fondness for Northern Ireland and Fri, 02 March 2018 12:37 Go to previous messageGo to next message

I developed a taste for Black Bush while over there. It's cask aged Bushmills. It's terrific but sometimes I find it a little sweet.

Not a huge whiskey fan but I do enjoy this one.

Oddly having trouble resizing imgur pics for TZ. Works for other sites....hmmmmm.

We visited the Bushmills distillery when we were there about 10 years ago.

Redbreast 21 is probably my all-time favorite whiskey. Sun, 04 March 2018 12:43 Go to previous message

It's definitely worth trying at least once. And dare I say that it is a decent value (ha!) compared to similar high end and high age statement scotch, bourbon, and Japanese whiskey.
