My Holiday Travelogue - London Wed, 03 January 2018 16:45 Go to next message

Departing Denver on Christmas. Got upgraded because the plane wasn't full! Wearing my Alden Indy boots which are as comfortable as slippers now that they're broken in.

Many hours later, approaching LHR. 0836 in London, 0136 back home in Denver
Untitled

Spent the day after arrival at Bletchley Park, home of Alan Turing and the codebreakers during WW II. Fascinating place. On the train from Euston Station to Bletchley.
Untitled

Alan Turing's office
Untitled

Overlooking Trafalgar Square from my brother-in-law's office

Untitled

The beautiful Westminster Abbey at dusk. We went for a service and Evensong.

Lots of amazing cars in London
Untitled

Drinks at the Connaught Bar, voted world's best cocktail bar last year
Untitled

My youngest daughter and I heading to the London New Year's Day Parade. We had the honor and privilege of riding in horse-drawn carriages at the front of the parade. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

A quick shot of the London Eye as we left in a coach at the end of the parade.

And almost home last night. Note I'm reading London time on the bezel.

Having lived in Rome for a year I really don't know how I never visited England at all. You have definitely captured many reasons to put a trip on the calendar.

Safe travels.

nice shots! I'm wondering why your brought two gmts. I can see if you brought a gmt and another type of watch, unless you let one of the kids wear one at the same time, but two of the same on vacation not so much. =)

<* shark >>><

ps - I must be the only guy on this forum to never bring more than one watch on a vacation (I have a hard enough time worrying about travel stuff let alone $15k worth of watches); so, take my comment with a grain of salt..LOL.

Funny you should ask... Thu, 04 January 2018 10:14 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Normally I am a one-watch traveler as well, for the exact reason you mentioned--I don't want to keep track of multiple, expensive watches. But when I go to London, I HAVE to take my blue/black. It's just the way it is.

On this trip I wanted to buy a coke insert from Rolex UK. The last time I bought a part from them they required that I have the watch present so they could install it (1.25 link for a jubilee) . I figured that might be the case with the insert as well so I brought the 16710 solely for that purpose.

Also, when I'm in London I stay at my brother's house so it's not like I'm in a hotel where things could get nicked.

But much to my chagrin, when I arrived at Rolex at St James Square on the 29th, they were closed for the holidays! ARGH! Shoulda called 'em.

Nevertheless, the pepsi and I had fun together.

Correct me if I am wrong here - The GMT Master was developed for air crews of transatlantic flights back in the fifties so they can track time across different timezones; just like what you have did here...Thanks for the great pics, and congrats for the beautiful Pepsi.

London is such a wonderful city.

Too bad Rolex was closed, that's an awful long way to travel for a piece of aluminium ;)

My watch box is now full... Time for a second box.

It looks like you had a great time with some lovely watches, I only live about 30 miles from London, but only get up there about 6 times a year. It is a great place to visit though.

Having only a public school education in this country, I had to google "Lord Mayor of Westerminster". Very inpressive accomplishments. I ope to go to London soon. I want to do the history (especially WWII, IWM, visit the restored RAF field, Old Naval College, etc. My wife wants to visit the Royal Carriage Museum, etc.

Hey Shark

no worries: you are not alone. I always bring one watch only when I go on a vacation.
I read/heard as well too many scary stories so I prefer to travel with one toy only....

Kind regards
